One of the largest Venetian historical sight in Kefalonia island is the Castle of St. George, or known as the fort of Agios Georgios. The first walls of the castle were built in Byzantine times, with a significant later interventions by the Venetians. The importance of the Castle of St. George represent well, that this fort was the capital of Kefalonia until 1757!
