Old Sissia Monastery

The original buildings of Sissia Monastery were built slightly closer to the sea, which is nowadays known as the Old Sissia Monastery. The ruins of the old buildings can be reached in a pine forest, just a short walk away from the gates of the new monastery. The Old Sissia Monastery was founded by St. Francis of Assisi in the 13th century, and it was a Catholic Monastery for a while, until it became Orthodox.

Old Sissia Monastery

The old Monastery of Sissia was destroyed by an earthquake and the monks were built a new one, but the ruins can be seen today as well. In recent years some of the ruins are being restored.
