The history of Agios Theodoros Lighthouse
The original idea of the small Kefalonian lighthouse came from the English governor of the island, who decided in the 1820s to build a beacon structure for safer ship traffic in the area of Argostoli. St. Theodore Lighthouse was completed within a few years and was used from 1828.

The Lighthouse of Agios Theoros made the navigation of ships and local fishing boats much easier even on stormy nights, the fishermen of the island were extremely grateful for this useful construction. The lights of the tower could warn the boats for the nearness of the rocky coastline, and navigating to the port of Argostoli became significantly easier.

The building stood almost unchanged throughout the history of Kefalonia Island until 1953, but unfortunately it was almost completely destroyed by the great earthquake. The design of the new lighthouse of Agios Theodoros began almost immediately after the catastrophic earthquake at the original location, but the works ended just 7 years later.

The constructors tried to build the lighthouse in Kefalonia with a similar exterior as the first one, capturing its original look. Some old photos helped in the complete restoration of the Lighthouse of Argostoli, and the works were successful.
